As Friday April 1st was the final day of the school term for cadets in Falkirk we thought we would take a break from the normal programme and invite a guest speaker.

We were very pleased to have Stuart Shanks from a local company called UAV Services UK Limited who visited 470 Squadron to discuss the commercial implications for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles or what are more commonly known as “drones” and how his company is using them to revolutionise surveying.

This proved to be a fascinating presentation where the cadets and staff were equally captivated by the technology available. I do not think any of us really appreciated how advanced the commercially available variants have become in such a short space of time and how they can be used in extraordinary ways.

Stuart brought down a selection of equipment including VR goggles, a DJI Inspire drone and a variety of optical sensors which can be used for different purposes to let the cadets see the technology first hand.
