On Thursday 27th March 2025, 470 (Falkirk) Squadron had the pleasure of welcoming back Group Captain Sohail Khan to Falkirk Cadet Centre for our Lee’s Trophy inspection, the Air Training Corps competition to identify the best Squadron in the UK.
As the South East Scotland Wing nomination for the 3rd successive year, we were honoured to represent the wing once again. 470 has been very fortunate in recent years to participate in this competition at such a high level and it’s a testament to the hard work of the volunteer staff, cadets and civilian committee.
For 2025 we operated a normal project evening and had some new capabilities to demonstrate as part of commitment to STEM. Our refreshed “Project Room” has diversified away from its former focus on radio communications to become a multi-function room for the construction of RC aircraft and gliders, scale modelling and other technical projects. We have invested in 3d printing equipment to allow the cadets to manufacture parts and solve engineering problems set by our staff. For this event, the cadets designed a unique challenge coin and printed it in less than 15 minutes which was mind-boggling for some of our staff. Our updated flight simulator was also in operation giving multiple cadets the chance to fly using the VR goggles or big screen based on their preference.
At the end of the evening (and after much cake), Grp Cpt Khan presented our Commanding Officer, Flt Lt Colin Gray with the certificate for Best Squadron in South East Scotland Wing for 2025.
